England began the final day on 182-5, facing the daunting task of chasing 463 for victory. However, their resistance lasted just 48 minutes as the hosts were bowled out for 209, unable to withstand an inspired spell from fast bowler Matt Henry.
Henry delivered a masterclass in seam bowling, removing the remaining five wickets in just 5.1 overs while conceding only three runs during the spell. His second-innings figures of 6-29 completed a remarkable match haul of 11-109, having already picked up 5-80 in England’s first innings.
The performance made Henry only the latest New Zealand bowler to achieve a 10-wicket match haul and marked the first such feat of his Test career. More significantly, his figures of 11-109 are the best match returns by a New Zealand bowler against England in Test cricket.
Having been comprehensively beaten in the first Test at Lord’s, New Zealand responded in emphatic fashion to square the series at 1-1. Their all-round display ensured England had no chance of pulling off an unlikely chase and shifted the momentum back in the visitors’ favour.
With honours even after two matches, attention now turns to Nottingham, where the third and final Test, starting on Thursday, will decide the series winner.
