India’s industrial production grew 4.9 per cent in April 2026, driven by a strong performance in the manufacturing sector, according to the first release of the revised Index of Industrial Production (IIP) series with base year 2022-23.The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on Monday launched the new IIP series, replacing the 2011-12 base year and expanding the index’s coverage to better reflect the current structure of the economy. The Quick Estimate of IIP stood at 118.9 in April 2026 against 113.1 in April 2025, translating into a growth rate of 4.9 per cent. Manufacturing recorded a 6.2 per cent rise during the month. Electricity & Gas Supply grew 4.9 per cent, while Water Supply, Sewerage & Waste Management expanded 6.6 per cent. Mining & Quarrying contracted 5.1 per cent.Within manufacturing, 17 of the 23 industry groups posted positive growth. The biggest contributors were manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, which grew 12.7 per cent, manufacture of electrical equipment at 19.2 per cent, and manufacture of machinery and equipment at 12.9 per cent.Use-based classification data showed strong momentum in investment-linked sectors. Capital Goods output surged 16 per cent in April, while Intermediate Goods grew 7.7 per cent and Infrastructure/Construction Goods rose 7.1 per cent. Consumer Durables and Consumer Non-Durables recorded growth of 4.3 per cent and 2.8 per cent, respectively. The revised series introduces a broader industrial coverage, including Gas Supply and Water Supply, Sewerage & Waste Management activities, and expands the item basket to 463 item groups from 407 in the previous series. The new framework also provides separate indices for renewable and non-renewable electricity generation as well as detailed classifications within mining activities.MoSPI said the revised series aims to provide a more representative and comprehensive measure of industrial activity in line with evolving production patterns and international best practices. The IIP data for May 2026 will be released on June 29.
