On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose by 0.1 per cent in May compared to April. CBS noted that seasonal factors can influence short-term monthly price movements, particularly in categories such as clothing, where temporary discount periods affect pricing trends, CBS said in a press release.
The flash estimate is based on incomplete source data and provides an early indication of inflation developments before the release of the official Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures on June 9. Inflation is measured as the YoY change in the CPI, which tracks changes in prices paid by consumers for goods and services.
Netherlands’ inflation rose to 3.5 per cent year-on-year in May 2026, up from 2.8 per cent in April, according to a flash estimate by CBS.
Consumer prices increased 0.1 per cent month-on-month.
CBS said the estimate is based on incomplete data, with final CPI figures due on June 9.
Seasonal factors, including temporary clothing discounts, influenced monthly price movements.
Alongside the headline inflation figure, CBS also released preliminary price developments across selected product groups, including services and other major spending categories. Detailed breakdowns for all CPI categories will be included in the final May CPI publication.
The increase in inflation comes after a period of moderation earlier in the year and suggests that price pressures in the Dutch economy remain persistent despite softer readings in previous months.
