'We trusted the local doctor too much': Anju Aravind opens up about aunt's demise

Actress and dancer Anju Aravind has opened up about a deeply personal tragedy. In an emotional Facebook post the actress revealed the passing of her aunt, whom she described as one of the most influential figures in her life.Anju used the post not only to pay tribute to her beloved aunt but also to open up about the importance of seeking expert medical advice when health concerns come in.

A woman who shaped her life

Recalling her aunt’s impact, Anju described her as a strong and inspiring personality. She said her aunt played a major role in shaping her confidence, education and career. Her post read, “Raj aunty. She was not just my mother’s younger sister; she was like a mother to me. She was one of the biggest role models in my life.”She further wrote, “There was a special grace in the way she carried herself in a saree. Unlike most women of that time, she confidently wore high-heeled shoes and walked with remarkable self-assurance. She was the first person through whom I witnessed that kind of confidence.”

Support during difficult years

Anju also revealed the financial struggles she faced during her early years as a student of classical dance. She wrote, “During my dance-learning years, we faced many financial difficulties. When I first started learning Kuchipudi, there wasn’t even enough money to stitch a dance costume. At that time, Aunt gave me one of her sarees. My very first dance costume was made from that saree. Wearing that outfit, I participated in the Youth Festival and went on to reach the state level.”The actress credited her aunt for several important milestones in her life. Anju added, “If I am financially independent today, standing on my own feet and earning a living through my work, three-fourths of the credit belongs to Raj aunty. During one of the most difficult phases of my life, she showed me an advertisement in Mathrubhumi newspaper and encouraged me to apply to that college. Because of that, I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Bharatanatyam. Later, I went on to earn my Master’s degree from RLV College. Rajanti was also the reason my journey into cinema began.”

Delayed diagnosis left the family devastated

She further wrote, “But the biggest mistake we made was trusting the local doctor too much. Whenever Aunt complained of stomach pain, she would be told it was just a gastric problem and sent home with medicines. It was only much later that we discovered she had Stage 4 cancer.”The actress expressed her belief that earlier testing could have changed the outcome. She added, “If a scan had been recommended in the beginning itself, perhaps Raj aunty would still be with us today. No doctor should ever treat a patient this way.”Concluding the note, Anju described the pain of saying goodbye to someone who had given her so much love and support throughout her life. She wrote, “Today, as everything has come to an end and we prepared her for the final farewell, my heart broke. The emptiness is beyond words. What remains is endless gratitude and immeasurable love.”Ending her tribute with a final message of respect and remembrance, she added, “My respects and prayers.”Anju Aravind is known for her work in Malayalam, Tamil and Kannada films. She later became a familiar face on Malayalam television through serials and character roles.Disclaimer: This article contains mention of cancer and personal experiences related to the disease, which readers may find sensitive.
