China’s producer price index rose 3.9 per cent year on year in May 2026, signalling continued strength in factory-gate prices.
Monthly growth slowed to 0.5 per cent from 1.7 per cent in April, indicating moderating momentum.
Industrial upgrading and stronger seasonal demand supported prices in several sectors, while volatile crude oil markets tempered gains and weighed on some upstream industries.
According to NBS statistician Dong Lijuan, the May PPI performance was influenced by multiple factors, including the optimisation and upgrading of China’s industrial structure, which supported price increases in certain sectors. Seasonal demand growth also contributed to higher prices in some industries.
At the same time, fluctuations in international crude oil prices affected upstream industrial sectors, causing prices in some industries to shift from growth to decline, while moderating price increases in others.
