From music to handicrafts: 5 Indian markets that come to life at night, and what travellers need to know

Tucked right behind the historic Rajwada Palace, Sarafa Bazaar is completely unique. By day, it is a standard, busy jewellery and bullion trading centre. But once those shop shutters come down for the evening, the whole street flips into one of India’s most iconic street food destinations.

Things get going around 8 pm and the crowds stick around well past midnight. Food carts pop up right in front of the closed stores, creating a massive open-air dining area for locals and tourists alike.

You are really here for the food. You have to try Bhutte Ka Kees, a local dish made from grated corn cooked in ghee and spices. Other massive hits include Garadu, Khopra Pattice, Dahi Vada, gigantic Gulab Jamuns, and the famous Jaleba a supersized take on the usual jalebi.

The backstory of the market is pretty clever, too. Years ago, the local jewellers actually encouraged food vendors to set up at night because having crowds around naturally kept the area safe from thieves. Today, it is just a brilliant tradition.

How to reach: Indore has great air, rail, and road links. The market is right in the city centre, just a short drive from the main railway station.
