Iran and New Zealand shared the spoils in an entertaining 2-2 draw in their opening Group G match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Monday. While the action on the pitch delivered plenty of drama, the atmosphere in the stands reflected the political complexities surrounding the Iranian national team. Before kick-off, the playing of Iran’s national anthem was met with a mixture of cheers and loud boos from different sections of the crowd. The match was held in Los Angeles, which is home to one of the world’s largest Iranian diaspora communities, and the contrasting reactions highlighted the divisions that continue to exist among Iranians living abroad.Despite the charged backdrop, the focus soon shifted to the football.New Zealand made the brighter start and took the lead in the seventh minute through Elijah Just. The winger reacted quickest inside the box after captain Chris Wood picked him out with a precise delivery, volleying home from close range.Iran gradually settled into the contest and found an equaliser in the 32nd minute. Defender Ramin Rezaeian was in the right place at the right time to convert from close range, bringing the scores level and igniting celebrations among Iranian supporters inside the stadium. The Kiwis regained their advantage shortly after the restart. Once again, Chris Wood turned provider, slipping a pass into the path of Just, who calmly lifted the ball over goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand to complete his brace in the 54th minute.Iran refused to back down and drew level for a second time ten minutes later. Mohammad Mohebbi met a delivery at the far post and guided his header into the net, ensuring the match remained finely balanced heading into the closing stages. Both teams pushed for a winner, but neither could find the decisive breakthrough as the contest ended 2-2.Iran will remain in Los Angeles for their next fixture against Belgium, while New Zealand travel to Vancouver to face Egypt.
