China proposes AI, governance initiatives at APEC energy meet

China has put forward three proposals aimed at strengthening regional energy co-operation at the 71st Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Energy Working Group meeting held in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province.

The proposals focus on advancing high-quality universal energy access, promoting the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with energy systems, and enhancing coordinated energy governance across the Asia-Pacific region.

China proposed three initiatives at the 71st APEC Energy Working Group to strengthen regional energy cooperation.
The proposals focus on universal energy access, AI integration with energy systems and improved governance coordination.
The measures aim to boost resilience, transparency and innovation while supporting sustainable and inclusive development in the Asia-Pacific region.

The proposals call for inclusive development to ensure that energy benefits reach all economies through regional collaboration and the adoption of diversified technologies. They also advocate for accelerated innovation by aligning strategies and standards to deepen AI and energy integration. In addition, China also emphasised the need for stronger co-ordination mechanisms to improve the effectiveness, transparency and resilience of regional energy governance through policy dialogue and enhanced information sharing.

“China is committed to promoting the building of a safe, resilient and affordable energy system in the Asia-Pacific region and contributing Chinese wisdom and solutions to the energy security, stability and sustainable development in the region and the world,” He Yang, deputy head of the National Energy Administration, was quoted as saying by a Chinese news agency.

He also highlighted that the Asia-Pacific region plays a dual role as both a major global energy consumption hub and a key engine of energy production and transformation.
