Robert Downey Jr assures 'Avengers: Doomsday' will 'not be a let down'; Joe Russo teases 'most emotionally complex' film

Robert Downey Jr is building up the anticipation for his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. The actor, who is all set to turn shades darker as the newest villain, Doctor Victor Von Doom, has teased interesting details about the upcoming superhero film and assured fans that this one will not be a disappointment.Speaking with CBR alongside co-director Joe Russo, RDJ expressed confidence in the film, saying that it has “landed in a place that I think will more than suffice.”He clarified that his statement is not even related to how he executed his role, but rather, “It’s about the way it’s been structured and the other characters.” Without letting out any details about the film, he added, “There’s something going on in ‘Doomsday’, and forward that is literally the only antidote to: How do you not have these films be let down after an ‘Infinity War’ and an ‘Endgame?’ And boy, have we laboured long and hard to bring that down.“Russo on the other hand, teased, “There are a lot of surprises. I think [‘Doomsday’] is the most emotionally complex of all of them. And in a lot of ways, the most mature of all of them.”Downey also reflected on the team’s appreciation for the opportunity to continue expanding the Marvel saga with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and its follow-up, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. “To still be engaging with people who are critical when we fall short, but who understand how difficult it is when we get it right,” he said.‘Doomsday’ marks a significant shift for Downey, whose previous deade in the MCU saw him play the superhero Iron Man. The actor made his final appearance as the character in 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’, which marked the end of Marvel’s Infinity Saga. Since then, Marvel Studios has experienced mixed results at the box office, with only films like ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ winning over the box office and the fans.‘Avengers: Doomsday’, scheduled to open in theatres on December 18, 2026 and its follow-up ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ set for December 17, 2027, are set to close the MCU’s Multiverse Saga.
