The FIFA World Cup 2026 has introduced a unique way of honoring some of the game’s greatest servants. Fans watching Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo during the tournament may have noticed a special “FIFA World Cup Legacy” badge on their sleeves, an exclusive distinction reserved for a select group of football legends.

What is the FIFA legacy badge?

The FIFA Legacy badge is a personalized sleeve patch awarded to footballers whose longevity and achievements have left a lasting mark on World Cup history. The design features a golden player silhouette alongside the words “FIFA World Cup Legacy,” symbolizing a player’s enduring contribution to the tournament.Positioned directly beneath the official FIFA World Cup sleeve badge, the patch also includes customized elements such as the player’s name and national flag. Some versions even feature iconic player-specific details. Ronaldo’s badge, for example, reportedly incorporates a silhouette inspired by his famous “SIUU” celebration.

Why are Messi and Ronaldo wearing it?

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo made their World Cup debuts in Germany in 2006 and are now competing in their sixth tournament. For Messi, the journey has included the ultimate prize, lifting the World Cup trophy with Argentina in Qatar in 2022. Ronaldo, meanwhile, remains Portugal’s all-time leading scorer. The Legacy badge serves as recognition of that extraordinary achievement. With both Messi and Ronaldo featuring in their record-equalling sixth World Cup, the iconic duo are among the first players to wear the prestigious patch.

Which other players have received the legacy badge?

Messi and Ronaldo are not the only players wearing the honor in 2026. Other recipients include:

  • Luka Modrić (Croatia) – 5th World Cup
  • Manuel Neuer (Germany) – 5th World Cup
  • Yuto Nagatomo (Japan) – 5th World Cup
