NH-503 is approximately 99-kilometre stretch. It is now being upgraded under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) with the aim of improving traffic flow, enhancing road safety and eliminating long-standing bottlenecks. The benefit for tourists is smoother and quick access to Dharamshala and also the famous Kangra Valley. The new Dharamsala–Dehra alignment includes major engineering works which includes the Riyund Bridge and twin tunnels near Tarsuh village. This is perfect for motorists to pass heavily congested areas like Kangra Bazaar, Purana Kangra and Daulatpur areas. For weekenders from Delhi, the improved connectivity is a game changer. Instead of spending an entire day on the road, travellers can now reach Dharamsala in time for lunch. This road upgrade is also beneficial for travellers heading to nearby destinations such as McLeodganj, Palampur and Kangra. As per reports, travel time between Chandigarh and Palampur could reduce from nearly 6 six hours to around 3.5 hours.
So clearly, for travellers, the upcoming highway promises faster journeys and reduced travel time. This means improved road safety and greater flexibility along with saving time. However, travellers should remember that timelines for such huge infrastructural altering projects can change. It all depends on construction progress and operational clearances. But when done, it will be a milestone in improving connectivity to one of Himachal Pradesh’s most sought-after hill destinations, Dharamshala. If the planned upgrade is achieved by September, road trips from Delhi to Dharamshala could become among the quickest and most convenient Himalayan drives in northern India ever!
