After 30 years, pink lotuses bloom again at this iconic lake in Kashmir

The sudden reappearance of these flowers is the happy ending to a massive environmental cleanup.

For years, Wular was choking. Silt was building up, water levels were dropping, and the local habitat was severely degrading. The 1992 floods made a bad situation much worse by burying the lotus roots under deep sediment, effectively wiping the flowers from the landscape.

Hoping to turn things around, WUCMA stepped in with an ambitious plan. They dredged millions of cubic metres of built-up silt and hacked away at the invasive willow plantations that were aggressively taking over huge chunks of the wetland.

As the water cleared and sunlight finally reached the lakebed again, something amazing happened. Lotus rhizomes that had been lying dormant in the mud for decades essentially sprang back to life. To give nature a helping hand, conservation teams also scattered fresh lotus seeds across the newly restored zones.

Now, brilliant pink stretches across the water, a bold, living reminder of nature’s stubbornness and exactly what dedicated environmental work can achieve.
