The president of the DCCI has urged Bangladesh’s foreign ministry to accelerate free and preferential trade agreements as the country prepares for post-LDC challenges.
It said exporters need wider product and market diversification, with Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia identified as opportunities.
The state minister cited African market potential for jute goods and leather.
Ahmed raised the issues during a recent courtesy call on Shama Obaed Islam, MP, State Minister, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at her office. He also suggested that the government consider simpler direct payment mechanisms to support bilateral trade and investment with African countries, especially in contract farming, information technology and agriculture, the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry said in a media release.
Meanwhile, the minster said the government remains committed to trade agreements that can support bilateral trade and investment with Africa and other promising markets. She said closer government-private sector collaboration would be important and identified African market potential for Bangladeshi jute, jute goods, leather and leather products.
The discussion also covered the need to build private sector capacity for post-LDC challenges while supporting export diversification and market expansion.
DCCI senior vice president Razeev H Chowdhury, vice president Md Salem Sulaiman, acting secretary general Dr. AKM Asaduzzaman Patwary, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs director general Dr. Syed Muntasir Mamun were also present at the meeting.
