Can a snake bite through jeans or boots? Here’s what experts say and tips to stay safe outdoors

While appropriate clothing can make a difference, it is your behavior that has an even larger part to play in terms of avoiding snake bites. Some of the tips include the following:

* Always wear pants made of sturdy fabric and wear sturdy boots up to your ankles when moving around in places where there are many snakes.

* Always walk on designated paths rather than in tall grass, bushy areas, or heaps of leaves.

* Always watch where you step or put your hands, particularly if you are hiking, gardening, farming, or gathering wood.

* When moving around outdoors at night, always carry a light source because there are many types of snakes which become most active at night time.

* Avoid putting your hands in holes in the ground, in between rocks, or under logs without looking first.

* Do not try to pick up, annoy, or kill a snake in any way.

* When you see a snake, remain calm, keep your distance, and give it room to get away on its own.
