Can technical apparel be fashion’s next billion-dollar opportunity?

For much of the apparel industry’s history, innovation revolved around aesthetics, branding and manufacturing efficiency. Today, however, some of the most significant breakthroughs are happening far from the runway. Engineers, material scientists and textile developers are redefining what garments can do and the implications stretch well beyond fashion.

From shirts that monitor heart activity and jackets that regulate body temperature to industrial workwear that protects against chemical exposure, technical apparel is emerging as one of the fastest-evolving segments of the global textile value chain. What was once a niche market serving athletes, soldiers and healthcare workers is increasingly finding its way into mainstream wardrobes.
