EU adopts standard method for transport emissions reporting

The European Commission  has announced that the first EU-wide standardised methodology for calculating greenhouse-gas emissions from freight and passenger transport has entered into force. The new CountEmissionsEU framework introduces a single science-based system aligned with international standard EN ISO 14083:2023 to ensure transport emissions data is accurate, comparable and reliable across all transport modes.

The framework enables door-to-door emissions calculations, allowing businesses to benchmark performance, improve logistics efficiency and support low-carbon procurement strategies. It is also intended to provide consumers, businesses and public authorities with clearer emissions information to support more sustainable decision-making.

The EU has introduced CountEmissionsEU, the first bloc-wide framework for calculating greenhouse-gas emissions from freight and passenger transport.
Aligned with EN ISO 14083:2023, the methodology aims to deliver accurate and comparable emissions data across transport modes, helping businesses improve logistics transparency and support low-carbon decision-making by 2030.

The rules apply to EU companies that voluntarily disclose transport emissions, ensuring that published figures follow a consistent and verifiable methodology. The European Commission will now work on implementing and delegated acts to refine technical specifications and will provide guidance and digital tools to support adoption, especially among SMEs.

The framework is expected to be fully applied across the European Union by the end of 2030.
