John Lithgow makes Tony awards history; 'Giant' star becomes oldest Best Actor in Play winner

John Lithgow has added another achievement to his long and successful career after making history at the Tony Awards. The veteran actor set a new record by becoming the oldest winner in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play category.The actor achieved the milestone at age 80 for his performance in ‘Giant’.

Victory comes 53 years after first Tony Award

John Lithgow’s latest victory carried additional significance because it arrived more than five decades after his first Tony Award triumph.As reported by Deadline, during his acceptance speech, John Lithgow opened up about his experiences and expressed gratitude for his journey in theatre. “I’m such a lucky actor,” he said. He also looked back on earlier career milestones and mentioned his previous Tony-winning performances in ‘The Changing Room’ and ‘Sweet Smell of Success’.The actor also recalled that ‘The Changing Room’ represented his Broadway debut.

John Lithgow reflects on his theatre journey

John Lithgow pointed out an interesting connection between his first major theatre milestone and his latest award-winning project. Similar to ‘Giant’, ‘The Changing Room’ had also begun its journey at London’s Royal Court Theatre before moving to Broadway. Reflecting on the long span between both achievements, John Lithgow said, “Two Tony bookends, with 53 years between them.”He further added, “In those years, I have worked with hundreds of fantastic theatre artists. I’ve had dozens and dozens of ecstatic theatre moments onstage. But I’ve got to tell you, this moment has got to be one of the best.”John Lithgow also opened his speech with a lighter moment while acknowledging the other nominees in his category. “Oh my God, this is wonderful,”He continued, “The other gentlemen in my category, you all deserve this. I got it.”Later, he shifted focus to the play itself and spoke about the themes explored through the production. “Because I play the lead role in an extraordinary play, ‘Giant’. A stunning play made by people full of love and kindness. But it’s a play about cruelty in a cruel age,”

‘Giant’ and John Lithgow Lithgow’s wider legacy

In ‘Giant’, John Lithgow portrays author Roald Dahl during a period in the 1980s when the writer faced criticism surrounding antisemitic remarks.The role had already earned John Lithgow significant recognition during its London stage run and also brought him his first Olivier Award.Throughout his career, John Lithgow has built a remarkable list of accomplishments. He has received Emmy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Olivier Awards and Tony Awards, along with several nominations across major platforms.His film credits include ‘Conclave’, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, ‘Bombshell’, ‘Interstellar’, ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ and ‘Shrek’.
