Think your kitchen is clean? These 7 everyday items probably need more frequent cleaning

While the kitchen is usually perceived as the heart of any home, it is quite likely to become the place with a great number of bacteria accumulated there. Although most homeowners clean dishes and countertops, there are many commonly used kitchen utensils that need to be regularly cleaned. The combination of moisture, bacteria, and food residue provides perfect conditions for bacterial development. It can not only keep your kitchen clean but also help you increase the longevity of some products. Here is the list of seven things in the kitchen which deserve being cleaned more often.

Kitchen sponge

A kitchen sponge is one of the most used things in any kitchen but it is also the perfect place for bacteria accumulation. Cleaning it regularly and leaving it to dry after using is crucial. Additionally, sanitation of the sponge will help to reduce the amount of bacteria accumulated there.

Cutting boards

No matter whether you use a wooden or plastic board, you might find grooves on its surface where food residues and bacteria can accumulate. Cutting boards used for working with raw meat, fish, fruits, and vegetables need to be cleaned thoroughly after each use with warm soapy water. Periodic sanitation of boards with the help of a solution can help to avoid the accumulation of bacteria on them. Using separate boards for meat and fruit is advisable.

Refrigerator door handles

The door handle of the fridge is constantly touched during the preparation of meals. Nevertheless, this part of the fridge is often neglected during cleaning sessions. Oils, fingerprints, and bacteria from hands can accumulate on its surface. Wiping the refrigerator handles with a disinfecting cloth or mild cleaning solution will help to prevent the spread of germs in the kitchen.

Dish drying rack

The assumption that racks remain clean because dishes were washed is incorrect. The accumulation of water drops, food residues, and soap on them leads to the growth of mould and mildew. Cleaning of the rack with hot soapy water once a week and drying it properly will help to keep dishes safe.

Spice jars and containers

As spices are used almost every day during cooking, jars and other containers for spices are also touched often enough. As the hands of homeowners touch raw food before touching the lids, food residues and oils can be left there. Wiping the lids of spice jars with a damp cloth will help to prevent any sticky residue.

Microwave interior

Food residues on the interior of the microwave are rather common, but they are rarely cleaned before becoming stubborn stains. Food particles are the source of unpleasant odours and make it difficult to clean the stains. Wiping the interior after each few uses will help to prevent the accumulation. Cooking a bowl of water with lemons inside can help to wipe off the residues inside the microwave.

Trash bin lid

Although the bin liner is used for waste collection, the lid of the bin and surrounding area can also contain food splashes, fingerprints, and bacteria. Washing the lid with warm soapy water or disinfectant can help to reduce odours and ensure cleanliness in the kitchen. Drying of the bin before changing the liner will also help to avoid bacteria accumulation.
