San Francisco Unicorns jumped to the top spot in the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026 standings in emphatic fashion, producing a batting masterclass to thrash Washington Freedom by eight wickets and significantly boost their Net Run Rate.Chasing a challenging target of 191, the Unicorns raced to 193/2 in just 15.1 overs, leapfrogging the Seattle Orcas, who had briefly climbed to the summit earlier in the day. The statement victory also reinforced San Francisco’s credentials as one of the tournament favourites heading into the business end of the league stage. The chase was built around a breathtaking 102-run opening partnership between Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Finn Allen, who tore into the Freedom attack from the outset.Pretorius smashed 66 off just 26 balls, while Allen blasted 45 from 18 deliveries as the pair effectively ended the contest inside the Powerplay.

Pretorius credits backing from management

Named Player of the Match, Pretorius said the confidence shown in him by the coaching staff has been key to his remarkable consistency.“I just think it all comes down from the management backing you, always speaking positive and encouraging you to have a positive mindset out there,” he said. The young opener revealed he had entered the match aware of the fastest fifty record and celebrated reaching the milestone in just 16 balls.“I wanted to get the record after the first over, so, yeah, I’m glad I could hit that last one for six,” he said after a 16-ball fifty.Pretorius added that clear thinking rather than reckless aggression has transformed his batting.“I think it can go both ways, like recklessness. I fell into that trap… Now it’s just backing your options and staying within your game plan, reading conditions and trying to assess which I feel is important as an opening batter,” he added. He also acknowledged the tricky nature of the surface.“On wickets like these, being a bit two-paced, just having clarity and backing your options and committing to it 100%. That’s my mindset going into every game,” he said.Freedom’s 190 proves well below parEarlier, Washington Freedom posted what appeared to be a competitive 190/4 after Andries Gous anchored the innings with an unbeaten 83 off 50 balls, while Mitchell Owen struck a rapid 39 at the top.Nikhil Chaudhary’s late 32 from 19 deliveries added valuable impetus, but Freedom’s bowlers failed to exploit the two-paced conditions and repeatedly offered scoring opportunities.Three dropped catches compounded their problems as the Unicorns made light work of the chase.Asked who hit the bigger sixes between himself and Allen, Pretorius laughed before replying: “Probably Finn.”With the convincing victory, San Francisco not only completed one of the fastest successful chases of the season but also returned to the top of the MLC table.
