Most couples don't know the safest time to get pregnant again: Here's the ideal gap before planning baby No. 2

When is the right time to have a second baby?- a question many couples deliberately think about. While factors like personal readiness and family planning take a seat in this, one more factor plays an important role, which is health- both the mother’s and the next baby’s. Many couples are unaware that the interval between pregnancies plays an important role in reducing the risk of complications.

Why maintaining gap between two babies is important

The journey from pregnancy to childbirth isn’t easy for a woman. It places tremendous demands on a woman’s body. If another pregnancy occurs too soon, the body will not have enough time to replenish nutrients and heal completely. Thus, it can increase the risk of complications for both the mother and the baby. Dr. Renu Kohli Malik, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, says, “Maintaining a gap between pregnancies is important because a mother’s body becomes depleted of essential nutrients such as iron, calcium, and other vitamins during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. The uterus also needs adequate time to heal and recover before it is ready to support another pregnancy.”

What is the ideal gap to plan the next baby

As per the World Health Organization (WHO) waiting at least 24 months after a live birth before attempting the next pregnancy. Since pregnancy itself lasts around nine months, this translates to roughly 33 months (about 2 years and 9 months to 3 years) between the births of two children. The WHO has recommended this based on evidence showing that pregnancies spaced too closely together are associated with a higher risk of health problems for both mother and baby.

Are the recommendations the same after a normal delivery and a C-section?

A cesarean section (C-section) is a major abdominal surgery and for women who have undergone a C-section, experts commonly recommend waiting at least 18 months before conceiving again.

Every family’s timeline is different

While the ideal gap is stated to be around 3 years, it may not be a one-size-fit for all. Where three years may be ideal for one, for another the ideal gap may be more than that. It depends on several factors- such as the mother’s age, existing medical conditions, emotional and mental readiness.Ultimately, while family planning is a personal decision, it should also be an informed one. If you’re thinking about welcoming baby number two, don’t base your decision solely on what worked for friends, relatives, or social media advice. Every pregnancy is unique. Taking advice from a gynaecologist or obstetrician can help understand what stands best for the mother and baby’s health.
