Netherlands retail turnover rises 2.9% in May

Retail turnover in the Netherlands rose by 2.9 per cent year on year (YoY) in May 2026, while sales volume increased by 2.3 per cent, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS). The data put apparel, footwear and home furnishings suppliers among the non-food segments with positive YoY movement. Non-food turnover, including retail not in shops, increased by 3.9 per cent, with sales volume up 3.1 per cent from May 2025. Among key non-food branches, chemists posted the strongest turnover increase at 6.5 per cent. Home furnishings stores grew 3.8 per cent, clothes shops 3.7 per cent, and footwear and leather goods stores 0.7 per cent. 

Netherlands retail turnover rose 2.9 per cent year on year in May, with sales volume up 2.3 per cent.
Non-food gained 3.9 per cent, while clothing stores advanced 3.7 per cent and home furnishings 3.8 per cent.
Online fashion turnover jumped 14 per cent, signalling stronger digital demand for apparel sellers and sourcing teams.

The retail turnover figures were adjusted for the composition of shopping days in May, as sales differ by weekday. Without this adjustment, total retail turnover would have been 1.2 per cent higher than a year earlier, CBS said in a press release. 

Online retail turnover increased by 4.8 per cent YoY. CBS reported that pure online retailers grew turnover by 6.7 per cent, while multi-channel retailers advanced 3.5 per cent. For apparel sourcing and retail teams, online clothing and fashion retailers recorded a 14 per cent rise in turnover.
