The chemistry behind the promise
Performance wear has a chemistry problem because performance itself has often been chemical. For decades, PFAS were used in textile and footwear supply chains to deliver water, oil and stain resistance—the invisible function behind rain shells, outdoor gear, activewear, uniforms and waterproof footwear. The same durability that made PFAS useful is now the liability: regulators define the family as long-lasting chemicals that break down very slowly, with some exposure linked to harmful health effects.
For apparel, the issue is especially sensitive. These products are worn on the body, washed repeatedly and marketed around movement, health and outdoors. A “dry” garment cannot carry a permanent pollution story.
