We live in a time when children are handed tablets before they can walk, when the internet puts the world at your fingertips, and when “accessible education” is discussed in reputed meetings with top officials and policy papers. And yet, for millions of visually impaired children across the world, a simple textbook remains out of reach.A boy from Pune, who has been blind since he was barely a year and a half old, walked into this gap. He was homeschooled after being turned away by schools, with few traits that shine brighter in him than anything else. Curiosity, confidence, and an unshakeable will.His name is Prathamesh Sinha, and he is over 14 years old.He has gone out and shown the world what accessibility could look like and has appeared on national television, in front of India’s Prime Minister, and also on a stage where the President of India placed a National Award in his hands.At a young age, this epitome of courage has become symbolic of what happens when a child refuses to let the world’s limitations become his own.

Meet Prathmesh Sinha: the ‘blind’ prodigy who taught India how to ‘see’
When Prathamesh Sinha was just 16 months old, a brain tumour took away his sight. His parents, Deepshikha and Ashutosh Kumar Sinha, were told their son was blind. Finding a school for him was its own battle, as most turned him away. He was homeschooled until 2019, after which he joined the Poona School and Home for the Blind in Pune.And it was there, during the pandemic, when school was shut and the world had gone online, that Prathamesh discovered something that would change the course of his life through a small device called Annie.Annie, developed by Thinkerbell Labs, is the world’s first self-learning Braille device. The idea behind it is that no disability should ever stop a child from learning.
Prathamesh became its most passionate ambassador
At just 10 years old, he appeared on Shark Tank India as Thinkerbell Labs’ brand ambassador, explaining and talking about Annie’s keys, buttons, and learning method to the Sharks.He was the youngest contestant the show had ever seen. When one Shark asked if he owned equity in the company, he smartly replied that he was the brand ambassador. The studio loved it. And when someone wondered how he’d manage, Prathamesh simply said, “I’ll manage” and these three words became the most talked-about moment of the episode.Apart from this, he was also brought on stage at boAt’s Annual Leadership Meet, where he shared his story with the entire team and left everyone teary-eyed.

But the journey didn’t stop at a TV studio. In July 2022, Prathamesh stood before Prime Minister Modi. At Digital India Week 2022, the then 11-year-old demonstrated Annie to PM Narendra Modi, introducing himself as the company’s brand ambassador. PM Modi, in his speech, said that meeting confident people like Prathamesh reinstates his faith that the country has a bright future.
That faith, it seems, was well placed
In December 2024, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, President Droupadi Murmu presented the National Awards for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities. Among the awardees was 13-year-old Prathamesh Sinha from Pune, recognised in the ‘Shreshth Divyang Bal/Balika’ category.The official citation from the Government of India described him as: a motivational speaker and advocate for visually impaired children and cancer patients who, despite 100% blindness since infancy, promotes Braille literacy through the ANNIE device, which he presented on Shark Tank India and to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Apart from all these accolades to his name, he has an additional feather in his hat for already being a TEDx speaker at this tender age. He is a shining example of the power of determination and innovation in making learning accessible to all.
