Ravi Bridge reopens: After long months of disruption, Jammu Rail Services are back on track; here's what it means for travellers

In a recent update, Jammu Rail Services are back on track, restoring one of northern India’s most significant rail corridors. This is welcoming news for those heading to Jammu and Kashmir. It had been almost nine months since the flood had damaged the bridge. The restoration follows the successful repair of Railway Bridge No. 17 over the Ravi River between Kathua and Madhopur. The flash flood and heavy rainfall in 2025 caused severe damage to the bridge, forcing Indian Railways to suspend, divert, or partially terminate dozens of train services connecting Jammu with the rest of the country. Over 50 trains were affected. The Northern Railway took to X and shared happy news that engineers completed the bridge restoration in record time. This means full rail connectivity on the route. Railway officials announced that normal rail traffic to and from Jammu resumed from May 31.“Restoration done in Record Time!Northern Railway restored Bridge No. 17 over Ravi River, Kathua-Madhopur, in just 8 months. With this, all major bridges in the region are fully operational, significantly boosting train punctuality and connectivity across the Jammu Division.Kudos to our dedicated engineers!” wrote the Northern Railway. What it means for travellersThe reopening of the bridge and restoration is more than just a milestone. Jammu is the main gateway to some of northern India’s most visited destinations, including Vaishno Devi, Kashmir valleys, and many Himalayan tourist circuits. The restoration clearly means that passengers can once again enjoy seamless train journeys from major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Chennai without facing route diversions or lengthy transfers. It is also the perfect time as Jammu and Kashmir enters the peak summer travel season now. Tourism officials expect that this will also boost visitor numbers in the valley, especially among budget-conscious travellers who prefer rail journeys over flights. In recent years, Indian Railways has invested heavily in strengthening access to Jammu and Kashmir. The completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), along with the inauguration of iconic engineering landmarks such as the Chenab Rail Bridge and the Anji Khad Bridge, has dramatically improved connectivity to the region. New Vande Bharat services now connect Jammu and the Kashmir Valley, reducing travel times and making the journey more comfortable for tourists.

For many travellers, however, the restored Ravi bridge represents something equally important: reliability. The Jammu–Pathankot rail section is a lifeline for both tourists and local residents. With trains once again running normally and summer holidays underway, the journey to Jammu and beyond has become easier than it has been in months—a development likely to be welcomed by travellers across the country.
