In Q4 2025, GDP had increased by 0.2 per cent QoQ in both areas.
Seasonally-adjusted GDP increased by 0.3 per cent year on year (YoY) in the euro area and by 0.7 per cent YoY in the EU in Q1 2026, after a 1.2-per cent YoY rise in the euro area and a 1.4-per cent increase in the EU in Q4 2025.
In Q1 2026, seasonally-adjusted GDP decreased by 0.2 per cent quarter on quarter (QoQ) in the euro area and by 0.1 per cent in the EU, according to Eurostat.
Denmark recorded the highest QoQ GDP rise.
It increased by 0.3 per cent YoY in the euro area and by 0.7 per cent YoY in the EU in the quarter.
Employment increased by 0.5 per cent YoY in both the euro area and the EU in the quarter.
In Q1 2026, Denmark (plus 1.9 per cent) recorded the highest QoQ GDP increase. Declines were recorded in Ireland (minus 12.1 per cent), Lithuania (minus 0.3 per cent), Sweden (minus 0.2 per cent) and France (minus 0.1 per cent).
Based on seasonally-adjusted figures, Eurostat estimates that in Q1 2026, 221.2 million people were employed in the EU, of which 176.3 million were in the euro area.
The number of employed persons increased by 0.1 per cent QoQ in the euro area and remained stable in the EU. In Q4 2025, employment had increased by 0.2 QoQ per cent in both areas, a release from Eurostat said.
Employment increased by 0.5 per cent YoY in both the euro area and the EU in Q1 2026 after a 0.7-per cent rise in the euro area and a 0.6-per cent increase in the EU in Q4 2025.
