Why lean matters more than ever
Textile manufacturers have long faced a brutal combination of pressures: fast fashion demands shorter lead times and constant style turnover, buyers negotiate razor-thin margins, and labour costs push production towards whichever region offers the cheapest workforce. This volatility has made continuous improvement not optional but existential. Lean tools give manufacturers a way to compress lead times, reduce fabric and material waste, and improve quality without necessarily investing in expensive new machinery, a critical advantage in a sector still dominated by small and mid-sized factories, particularly in South and Southeast Asia.
Recent academic research puts numbers behind the theory. A **** study on garment manufacturing published in the International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology found that structured lean implementation raised production output by nearly ** per cent, improved overall efficiency by over ** per cent, cut cutting-department defect rates roughly in half, and shortened lead times by as much as ** per cent in some facilities. Separate research on small and mid-sized enterprises found that Value Stream Mapping alone, a tool used to visualise and streamline the flow of materials and information, reduced fabric waste by close to ** per cent in one documented case.
