US-based Elessent commissioned its second BELCO SOx scrubber at TotalEnergies’ Antwerp refinery, strengthening emissions control capacity.
The system treats catalytic cracker flue gases, helping the refinery meet stricter sulphur oxide (SOx) emission requirements.
The installation supports cleaner refinery operations and reinforces demand for advanced industrial gas cleaning technologies.
“In perspective of our long-term ambition, we are taking a giant step in making our Antwerp site more sustainable with this brand-new SOx scrubber,” said Ann Veraverbeke, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Antwerpen.
This milestone represents the culmination of a highly coordinated effort delivered safely, on schedule, and to the highest quality standards. Through close collaboration during construction and commissioning, teams from TotalEnergies and Elessent successfully brought the unit online, reinforcing confidence in the refinery’s long-term development plans.
“The successful startup of this second BELCO SOx scrubber at Antwerp reinforces the value our technology continues to provide to refiners around the world,” said Samantha Presley, VP Cleaner Refining, Elessent Clean Technologies. “We appreciate the trust TotalEnergies has placed in Elessent and are proud to support their emissions reduction strategy with proven, high-performance gas cleaning solutions.”
BELCO technologies covers a complete range of gas cleaning technologies for industrial applications including the BELCO wet scrubber, SHELL third stage separator (TSS), and NOx reduction technologies. These technologies reliably control particulate, SOx and NOx emissions to the most stringent regulatory requirements. BELCO wet scrubbing technology is the global standard for limiting flue gas emissions from oil refinery fluid catalytic cracking units (FCCUs), fluid cokers, fired heaters, and boilers using a unique, single up flow tower with robust, non-plugging features. The BELCO wet scrubbing technology is the world leading FCCU flue gas emissions control technology with more than 150 licensed units worldwide. It is also the top choice for pre-cleaning and cooling hot dirty flue gas streams ahead of carbon capture units (CCUs) for CO2 reduction. The SHELL TSS technology provides protection from particulates for FCCU turbo expanders and can meet regulatory particulate emission requirements. Used across multiple industries, the NOx reduction technology uses a simple ozone oxidization process that converts NOx to water soluble compounds that are easily removed with wet scrubbing.
