US declines USMCA renewal in its current form

The United States has not agreed to renew the Agreement between the United States of America, Mexico, and Canada (USMCA) in its current form after a required joint review with Mexico and Canada on July 1, 2026. The Agreement is therefore not renewed, but it remains in force pending resolution of the issues raised or until termination. For exporters, importers, manufacturers and retail sourcing teams tracking North American trade rules, the immediate point is continuity. The agreement continues to operate while the three parties engage further. The US has said it will keep working with Mexico and Canada to address what it called the Agreement’s shortcomings and its trade deficits with the two countries.

The United States has not agreed to renew USMCA in its current form after a July 1, 2026 joint review with Mexico and Canada.
The pact remains in force while the parties seek to resolve issues, keeping North American trade arrangements operational for importers and sourcing teams.
US-Mexico bilateral talks are scheduled for the week of July 20.

According to Ambassador Greer’s statement, the USMCA Free Trade Commission, made up of government representatives from each party, was required under the Agreement to conduct the joint review on July 1, 2026. The United States, Mexico and Canada met virtually to discuss the operation of the USMCA.

The statement also said that, as previously announced, the United States will meet Mexico during the week of July 20 for a third round of bilateral negotiations related to the USMCA joint review.
