Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa inaugurated the first Syria International Textile Exhibition (NASTEX 2026) in Damascus recently, describing it as a ‘creative starting point’ for reconstruction efforts, combating poverty and creating jobs.
More than 300 companies are participating in the four-day event that seeks to rebuild commercial networks, attract investment and restore Syria’s competitiveness.
Syria’s textile sector has been severely hit by years of war, damage to industrial facilities and the migration of factory owners and skilled workers.
The event is expected to help revive Syria’s textile and furnishings industries and encourage Syrian industrialists abroad to return and resume production in cooperation with government institutions, according to a domestic news agency.
Syria’s textile industry retains significant advantages, including domestic cotton production and decades of manufacturing expertise, which could help it regain its historical position if backed by favorable economic conditions.
Economy Minister Mohammad Nidal al-Shaar termed NASTEX as a message of confidence in Syria’s return to its natural position as a regional centre for production, industry and trade.
His ministry’s vision is based on creating a more open and competitive investment environment, removing obstacles to production, modernising industry, encouraging innovation and strengthening exports, the minister added.
