China already controls Bangladesh**;s textile supply chain
TexPro trade data through Q* **** shows that Bangladesh imported $*.** billion of textiles (HS **–**) in the quarter. China alone supplied $*.** billion , a **.* per cent share, up from **.* per cent in Q* ****. India, the second-largest source, fell from **.* per cent to **.* per cent and lost $*** million in absolute terms year-on-year, most of it in cotton. Bangladesh is not diversifying its input base. It is quietly re-concentrating in China.
The concentration is deepest in the categories most critical to garment production. In Q* ****, China supplied **.* per cent of Bangladesh**;s man-made-fibre filaments and staple fibres, the raw material behind polyester and viscose apparel. It also supplied **.* per cent of knitted fabrics, the largest fabric segment feeding Bangladesh**;s export mills. Even in cotton yarn and fabric historically India**;s stronghold, China**;s share climbed to **.* per cent, essentially level with India**;s **.* per cent. Across the full **** calendar year, China and India together supplied about $**.* billion, or ** per cent of Bangladesh**;s textile imports. Roughly three of every five of those dollars flowed to Chinese suppliers.
