After a decade in New York, Indian man says he finally understood why so many people leave

New York is the kind of city that rarely needs an introduction. It is where people go chasing bigger careers, fresh opportunities, and a faster way of life. Every year, thousands arrive believing hard work will be enough to make it there. But according to an Indian man who has spent around a decade in the city, the real challenge begins after you settle in.His conversation with Indian traveller Kunal Dutt is now drawing attention online for offering a grounded look at everyday life in New York. Instead of focusing on the city’s famous attractions, the discussion explored the emotional and financial realities of living there and why many people eventually decide it is time to move somewhere else.

The pressure to keep up never really stops

The conversation began with Dutt asking whether New York can make people feel isolated if they are unable to match its fast-moving lifestyle. The resident said that it can happen very easily. According to him, the city constantly puts people in an environment where everyone appears to be working towards something bigger. If someone is not happy with their own progress, they may begin comparing themselves with others, and that feeling can become difficult to deal with over time.

Daily expenses can add to the stress

Apart from the mental pressure, the discussion also highlighted the city’s high cost of living.Dutt said that even a meal at a good restaurant could cost anywhere between $100 (around Rs 9,533) and $150 (around Rs 14,299). He added that when people are already trying to build careers and manage finances, such expenses can make the city’s fast pace feel even more overwhelming.

Why the city appeals to young professionals

The resident said New York is a place where many people arrive during the phase of life when they are ready to work relentlessly. He believes the city suits people who enjoy hustling and are willing to keep pushing themselves. Looking back at his own experience, he said his most energetic years were between the ages of 23 and 35 or 36, and that was the period when New York matched his pace.

Why many people choose to leave later

As the conversation moved ahead, Dutt pointed out that priorities often change with time. Once people start planning for marriage, children, and buying a home, many begin looking beyond New York. The resident agreed and said that after living in the city for around five to six years, many move to the suburbs in search of larger homes, gardens, and better schools. He also said Florida and Texas are popular choices because residents there pay only federal tax and not state income tax. He added that cities in Central America are also much more affordable than expensive places such as New York, San Francisco, California, and Boston.Disclaimer: This article is based on a social media post and publicly available content.
