Germany’s consumer inflation rate 2.6% in May: Destatis

The consumer price index (CPI)-based inflation rate in Germany stood at 2.6 per cent in May this year, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

Germany’s CPI inflation rate stood at 2.6 per cent in May this year. The rise in overall consumer prices, therefore, slowed, after having stood at 2.9 per cent in April 2026 and 2.7 per cent in March.
Compared with April this year, consumer prices were down by 0.2 per cent in May.
The prices of energy products were 6.6 per cent higher YoY in May 2026.
Core inflation stood at 2.5 per cent in May.

“The inflation rate in May 2026 was somewhat lower than in the previous months. Energy prices remained at a high level as a result of the Iran war, although the reduction in the tax on motor fuels, which has applied since the start of May, is likely to have had a dampening effect on the rise in prices”, said Destatis president Ruth Brand in a press release from the office.

Compared with April this year, consumer prices were down by 0.2 per cent in May.

The prices of energy products were 6.6 per cent higher year on year (YoY) in May 2026, primarily due to the price developments on the crude oil market in the wake of the conflict in the Middle East.

However, the YoY increase in energy prices was lower than in April 2026 (plus 10.1 per cent).  Energy prices in Germany were down by 3.6 per cent month on month in May

In May, the inflation rate excluding energy stood at 2.2 per cent and the inflation rate excluding heating oil and motor fuels was 2 per cent.

Core inflation (excluding food and energy) stood at 2.5 per cent in May 2026 and was, therefore, slightly lower than overall inflation.

The prices of goods in May were 2.2 per cent higher YoY.
