Naslen starrer 'Mollywood Times' faces CBFC heat; Producers may face legal action - Reports

‘Premalu’ star Naslen’s ‘Mollywood Times’ has found itself at the centre of a controversy related to its certification process. Reports say that the version screened in theatres may not match the version that was submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for approval. The CBFC is reportedly examining the matter and also gathering information before deciding on its next course of action. An official statement from the certification body is still awaited.

What triggered the CBFC’s attention?

According to The Week reports, the copy submitted for certification reportedly contained muted expletives. However audiences who watched the film in theatres allegedly heard the same words without those modifications. The reported discrepancy has led to concerns about whether the theatrical version differed from the certified version. This situation can lead to violation of certification rules if is established through official review.Reports indicate that the CBFC is collecting evidence related to the matter. A notice could reportedly be issued to the producer once the examination process is completed.

Possible legal consequences under the law

Under provisions of the Cinematograph Act, 1952, violations connected to certified film versions can attract penalties.Reports suggest that if authorities conclude that a breach occurred the producer could face legal action under the applicable provisions of the law. The matter may also lead to financial penalties if violations are established. At present, however, no final determination has been announced.

Will ‘Mollywood Times’ need re-certification?

One of the major questions is on whether ‘Mollywood Times’ will have to undergo another certification process. The film was cleared with a UA13+ certification, which allows general viewing while recommending parental guidance for younger audiences. As of now, there is no confirmation regarding any change to that classification. The CBFC has also not indicated whether the film could be asked to obtain a fresh certificate or whether any modifications to the existing certification will be required.Meanwhile, as reported by Manorama News, the Film Producers Association president B. Rakesh stated that the organisation has not received any complaints regarding the issue.Despite the controversy, ‘Mollywood Times’ continues to generate interest among audiences. Directed by Abhinav Sunder Nayak and starring Naslen K. Gafoor, the film has been receiving good reviews from the audiences.ETimes, in its review of the film, wrote, “Abhinav, who co-wrote it with Ramu Sunil, gives a refreshingly real take on the struggles in life. Refreshing because, while it could have easily slipped into bleakness, the writers keep the narrative upbeat and the hero never considers giving up on his dreams or really compromising on his principles. So the ideas are compelling, but the storytelling begins to feel muddled, particularly in the second half. The several hurdles that come in the way of Vineeth’s dreams are solely from Mollywood’s peculiar manner of functioning and it gets tiresome. The bits on SC/ST privilege feel surprisingly tone deaf and needless.”The film has been co-written by Abhinav Sunder Nayak and Ramu Sunil.
