Tamil Nadu has set a target of achieving ₹1,00,000 crore ($10.5 billion) in technical textile production and creating 5,000 specialised jobs by 2031, alongside a Centre of Excellence for Activewear in Tiruppur.
The Centre and state also reaffirmed plans to boost textile exports through FTAs, PM MITRA parks and technical textiles, with Tamil Nadu targeting $21 billion in textile exports by 2030.
Announcing the target, TN Venkatesh, Principal Secretary, Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles and Khadi Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, said that the state government has earmarked ₹1,250 crore ($132.07 million) over the next five years to develop hostels for women workers through the Social Welfare Department. He said Tamil Nadu has been assigned a textile export target of $21 billion as part of India’s ambition to achieve $100 billion in textile exports by 2030, with Tiruppur expected to contribute $11.5 billion. The state is also promoting investments in technical textiles, sustainable manufacturing, and value-added products to strengthen its global competitiveness.
The textile minister said textile parks are being developed under the PM MITRA scheme and emphasised the need to adopt modern manufacturing technologies and environmentally sustainable practices. He also reiterated the government’s goal of increasing India’s textile exports from around $38 billion to $100 billion by 2030 and assured continued Central Government support for the sector’s growth.
Earlier, TEA President KM Subramanian said Tiruppur exported knitwear worth more than ₹46,000 crore ($4.86 billion) during 2025–26, accounting for nearly 60 per cent of India’s knitwear exports. He urged the Centre to restore zero import duty on cotton, extend the Rebate of State and Central Taxes and Levies (RoSCTL) scheme, implement the Textile Export Excellence Mission (TEEM) at the earliest, improve workers’ accommodation and simplify import procedures to enhance the industry’s competitiveness.
Also speaking at the event, Dr M Beena, Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, described Tiruppur as a model textile cluster and said stronger collaboration between the Centre, the state government and industry would be vital to achieving India’s long-term textile export ambitions.
