Inside India’s oldest libraries that survived the Mughal era and the British rule

Situated within the historic Alfred Park (Chandra Shekhar Azad Park), Allahabad Public Library is one of northern India’s oldest public libraries. Its impressive Gothic architecture and extensive collection of books, newspapers and government publications make it a significant cultural landmark of India.

These ancient libraries not only preserved but kept intact the literary and intellectual tradition of India through all its transformations and changes, right from various dynastic rules to the British colonial period until today. Besides their beautiful architecture; these libraries also preserve valuable manuscripts and historical documents for educational purposes.
