Madeira honours Cristiano Ronaldo with spectacular drone tribute after World Cup farewell

Cristiano Ronaldo may have missed out on winning the FIFA World Cup, but the people of Madeira made sure he returned home as a hero.Shortly after Portugal’s Round of 16 defeat to Spain, hundreds of drones lit up the night sky over Funchal, the capital of Madeira, creating a stunning farewell for the Portuguese legend. The drone show was organised by members of the local community to celebrate Ronaldo’s legendary career and thank him for putting Madeira on the global map. Even though his World Cup journey has come to an end, the people of his hometown wanted him to know that he remains their greatest sporting icon. The display began with the Portuguese national flag glowing across the sky. Moments later, drones formed the words “Obrigado, 7,” which means “Thank you, No. 7.” The show then transformed into a giant image of Ronaldo wearing Portugal’s famous No. 7 shirt. One of the biggest highlights came when the drones recreated Ronaldo’s famous goal celebration, a moment recognised by football fans across the world. People gathered along the waterfront and in nearby public squares applauded as the tribute unfolded above them.Ronaldo’s influence on Madeira goes far beyond football. Before he became one of the biggest stars in world sport, Madeira was mainly known as a peaceful holiday destination. His success helped attract millions of visitors to the island over the years.Today, Madeira proudly features Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport, a museum dedicated to his career, a large statue in his honour and a hotel connected to his CR7 brand. These landmarks have become popular tourist attractions and continue to bring visitors from around the world.Ronaldo’s final World Cup match ended in heartbreaking fashion at Dallas Stadium. Spain secured a dramatic late winner through Mikel Merino in stoppage time, knocking Portugal out of the competition. The veteran forward struggled to make his usual impact during the match. He found himself isolated for long periods and received very little service from his teammates. After the final whistle, Ronaldo was unable to hide his emotions and broke down in tears as his World Cup career officially came to an end.Ronaldo first appeared at the FIFA World Cup in 2006 and went on to play in six editions of the tournament.
