Australia’s wool market stabilised in the second week of July 2026, with the EMI rising 5 cents to 1,909 ac/kg as stronger demand lifted Merino fleece prices.
Medium Merinos gained the most, while crossbred wool and Merino cardings weakened.
A smaller offering of 21,646 bales is scheduled for next week’s auctions, with Fremantle absent from sales.
Medium Merino fleece recorded the strongest gains, rising 25-30 cents, while fine Merinos improved by 5-10 cents. Buyer competition was particularly evident in the Fremantle selling centre, reflecting renewed confidence in Merino wool.
In contrast, crossbred wool prices weakened by 20-25 cents on average, with the sharpest declines in finer crossbred fleece of 28 micron and finer. Merino cardings also eased by 10-15 cents, indicating buyer resistance outside the main Merino fleece categories.
AWI said the market appears to have found a more stable footing, although the recovery remains selective rather than broad-based. Attention will now turn to next week’s auction, when a smaller national offering of 21,646 bales will be available across the Tuesday-Wednesday selling programme, with Fremantle not scheduled to sell.
