The direct impact on US-Brazil fibre trade, however, is likely to be limited because bilateral trade had already contracted sharply. According to TexPro data, US fibre imports from Brazil fell from $***,*** in Q* **** to just $*,*** in Q* ****, a decline of nearly ** per cent. The more significant implications lie beyond the bilateral trade relationship.

Chart *: US fibre imports from Brazil have collapsed from a Q* **** peak of $***,*** to just $*,*** in Q* ****. Direct bilateral fibre trade is now negligible, meaning the tariff**;s real cotton-flow impact must play out via Brazilian redirection to Asian mills.

At first glance, the tariff appears likely to divert Brazilian cotton away from the US market. In reality, the United States already imports very little Brazilian fibre. Brazil**;s cotton exports are overwhelmingly destined for Asian spinning hubs rather than American mills. The ** per cent duty therefore functions less as a market shock and more as reinforcement of an existing trade pattern.

The larger cost impact is indirect. As ICE cotton futures strengthen, US-origin cotton becomes more expensive for Asian buyers, while Brazilian cotton retains a pricing advantage at Asian ports. That widening price differential gives Asian mills greater incentive to favour Brazilian supplies over US cotton.
