Why parenting today feels more difficult than ever, and what parents can do about it

Parenting was never an easy task, but for modern parents, the challenge has become bigger than ever. While every parent has been expected to provide better than the previous generation, the bar has been set higher now. Now it’s not only limited to providing the best type of nutrition or the best education. Although it is certain that it’s not children that have changed, but the world around them. The world today is dominated by smartphones, social media, academic competition and endless information, and thus every decision comes with dozens of conflicting opinions. Here are some of the biggest parenting challenges families face today, and practical ways to deal with them:

Should parents let their child miss school to attend a family wedding?

Children are busier than adults

In the hopes of providing children every opportunity possible, some parents are stuck in the trap of overscheduling their kids. School, tuition, sports, dance lessons, and so on… the list feels endless in some families. Extra-curricular activities have their benefits, but children need time to be themselves. Packed schedules can leave children feeling exhausted. The exhaustion eventually affects parents as children will miss out on curiosity and independent thinking. What parents need to do: The foremost thing for parents to understand is that unstructured play isn’t a waste of time. Instead of trying to keep children constantly occupied, parents can focus on quality over quantity. Most importantly, leaving enough room for relaxation and free play can go a long way in supporting healthy development.

The constant struggle of handling too much

It’s not just about helping with homework now. Modern parenting has made it sound like parents need to be present in every moment of their child’s life. While being present is important, constantly trying to do everything can leave parents mentally and emotionally exhausted. This also has a connection with overscheduling kids. When a child is overscheduled, parents will naturally have the need to do more. What parents need to do instead: Experts say the goal isn’t to be involved every minute, it’s to be available when children truly need you. Giving children age-appropriate responsibilities, allowing them to make small decisions and letting them work through manageable challenges on their own can help them become more independent while also taking some pressure off parents.

The confusion between choosing gentle parenting vs strict parenting

The biggest debate now is whether a parent should raise their child being strict or gentle. One piece of advice suggests never shouting at children; another will say children need to be disciplined. Caught between these extremes, many parents are unsure of what the right approach actually is.What needs to be done: Actually, the confusion arises from misunderstanding gentle parenting. Being gentle doesn’t mean saying “yes” to everything. The healthiest approach lies in the middle. Instead of punishing children harshly or not punishing them at all, parents should work on setting firm limits and logical boundaries, because the healthy approach lies somewhere in the middle.

Parents are now lonelier than ever

Though a joyful journey, parenting in the modern age can also feel lonely. In nuclear families, parents juggling family life and demanding jobs (in most cases) creates an emotional burden anyone hardly talks about. The emotional isolation makes it harder to handle responsibilities and sometimes makes parents lose patience. Over time, this can make interactions feel more stressful than fulfilling. What can be done: Parenting was never meant to be done alone. Sometimes, simply talking to someone who understands the ups and downs of raising children can reduce stress and remind parents that they don’t have to handle every challenge by themselves.

Providing children a secure base from which they can explore the world is what makes a child feel supported and loved.

Providing children a secure base from which they can explore the world is what makes a child feel supported and loved.

The key to being a great parent isn’t about trying to be one. Providing children a secure base from which they can explore the world is what makes a child feel supported and loved. Letting go of the desire to be “perfect” in everything, and instead being present can do more good than anything else.
