The tree stands proudly on the campus of the former Indian Tobacco Company (ITC) in Munger. For generations, locals believed the tree was centuries old. Some also linked it with nearby historic structures, mostly to the Burra Bungalow. But scientists from the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP), Lucknow, studied it and verified the age of the tree using modern science instead of relying on history reports or oral traditions. Their findings are now published in the journal Quaternary Research. The study revealed that the tree is nearly 700 years old, making it the oldest scientifically dated banyan known anywhere worldwide.To find the age of the tree, the researchers extracted cellulose from selected wood samples. They then analysed the samples using Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dating. Older than the buildings around itWhat fascinated the researchers was the fact that the tree is older than historic structures in the region.Earlier, the age of the tree was linked to Burra Bungalow as it was planted outside of it. The bungalow is around 300 to 350 years old. But the new findings have changed the belief.
