England captain Harry Kane has refused to confirm whether the FIFA World Cup 2026 was his final appearance on football’s biggest stage, insisting it is too early to make a decision after his side’s heartbreaking semifinal exit against Argentina. England’s dream of reaching a first World Cup final since 1966 ended in dramatic fashion after the defending champions fought back to secure a 2-1 victory on Wednesday (local time). The defeat booked Argentina’s place in Sunday’s final against Spain, while the Three Lions will now take on France in the third-place playoff. Speaking in a video shared by DAZN Football on X after the match, Kane said he has no intention of making any immediate decisions about his international future and will instead evaluate things one season at a time. “It’s too early to talk about that. You know me as a person, it’s always just about taking it year by year and how I feel. And, look, the England national team is my pride and joy, it’s what I love to do most, more than anything. Obviously four years is a long way away and I’m 33 in the summer, but as you see on the other end, with Leo (Messi) there, he’s still performing at the highest level. So yeah, I never want to put a limit on these things. I’ll address every situation as they come, but for now it’s just about processing another tough loss with this team,” Kane said. England looked on course for a famous victory after Anthony Gordon put them ahead in the 55th minute, finishing off a delivery from Morgan Rogers after a cagey first half. However, the momentum shifted as England retreated into a deeper defensive shape, allowing Argentina to dictate proceedings. Jordan Pickford produced several important saves and Alexis Mac Allister struck the post before the pressure finally paid off. With five minutes remaining, Enzo Fernandez brought Argentina level after being picked out by Lionel Messi. Deep into stoppage time, Messi turned provider again, sending in a cross that Lautaro Martinez headed home to complete a remarkable turnaround and send the reigning champions into another World Cup final. England will now face France in the third-place playoff, while Argentina take on Spain in Sunday’s final.
