India’s Odisha to set up textile cluster on defunct spinning mill site

India’s Odisha state government has decided to set up a modern textile industry cluster in the premises of Shree Sarala Weavers Cooperative Spinning Mill at Tirtol in Jagatsinghpur district, according to Sampad Chandra Swain, minister of state (independent charge) for industries, skill development and technical education.

Established in 1982, the mill has been closed since the 1999 super cyclone. It employed around 1,200 workers before closure. Many valuable machines and tools are rusting in the mill.

The mill has been closed since 1999.
As a first step, Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation has given $2.41 million to the handloom and knitting industries department to get possession of the mill property.

As a first step, Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) has given ₹23 crore (~$2.41 million) to the handloom and knitting industries department to get possession of the mill property. The land will remain in IDCO’s ‘land bank’, according to local media reports.
