US’ Avient launches non-PFAS barrier for HDPE packaging

Avient Corporation, an innovator of materials solutions, launched Cesa Solvent Barrier Technology for high-density polyethylene (HDPE) bottles, a non-PFAS additive that can help manufacturers and brand owners meet tightening fluorochemical regulations without retooling extrusion blow molding lines. The technology serves personal care, household, home and garden, and automotive care brands that need reliable solvent containment in monolayer HDPE packaging.“Our customers are facing pressure from two directions — tightening regulations on fluorinated materials and meeting their customers’ expectations for robust packaging,” said Mayendran Pillay, General Manager. “Cesa Solvent Barrier Technology lets converters keep their existing extrusion blow molding lines and still deliver bottles that can hold up to aggressive solvents throughout the full shelf life. It also helps brand owners build consumer loyalty and trust by maintaining package integrity and product quality and performance without the use of fluorinated barrier treatments.”

Avient has introduced Cesa Solvent Barrier Technology, a non-PFAS additive for monolayer extrusion blow-moulded HDPE bottles.
The drop-in pellet blend is designed to run on standard lines, helping converters avoid specialised equipment or secondary processing.
Personal care, household, home and garden, and automotive care brands are target users in North America.

Why cesa solvent barrier technology for HDPE matters

This new blended barrier additive is developed for extrusion blow-molded (EBM) HDPE bottles, offering a simple and effective way to significantly reduce reagent permeation, which can potentially cause paneling, weight loss, poor label adhesion, and failure against US Department of Transportation hazardous-materials testing under 49 CFR (title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations). As brand owners move away from fluorinated barrier treatments, they need a non-PFAS option that works on existing lines and protects package integrity through distribution and shelf life.

How Avient’s new cesa solvent barrier technology can help

Avient’s Cesa Solvent Barrier Technology is a solid pellet-blend additive that lets down into HDPE during standard extrusion blow molding, enabling manufacturers to maintain package integrity and product performance without the need for specialized equipment or secondary processing steps. Validated internal lab data shows:

  • Excellent barrier performance: 2-10x reduction in weight loss vs. unmodified monolayer HDPE for a variety of reagents (mineral spirits, toluene, etc.)
  • Sustainable let-down ratio (LDR): APR-Recognition eligibility below certain concentrations.
  • Compatibility: regrind-compatible and prescreened against 5+ reagents in Avient labs.

Useful Applications

Cesa Solvent Barrier Technology is engineered for monolayer extrusion blow-molded HDPE bottles across a wide range of applications and markets, including:

  • Personal care packaging: helps maintain label adhesion and bottle geometry for body washes, oils, and styling products.
  • Household cleaners: reduces solvent weight loss and paneling in bottles holding terpene- and citrus-based cleaning formulations.
  • Home and garden chemicals: supports 49 CFR hazardous-materials package testing for fertilizers, herbicides, and pest-control formulations.
  • Automotive care fluids: improves containment of mineral spirits and aromatic-solvent formulations, such as wheel cleaners and engine degreasers.

Cesa Solvent Barrier Technology for HDPE is now available for commercial orders in North America.
